FOR BUYERS & SELLERS

Payments, fees & payouts

PayFast, Paystack, receipts, seller costs and where your money goes.

Updated 19 September 2026
The essentials

Online checkout opens a payment page belonging to the seller. Your gateway handles the transaction and receipt; MarketLane does not collect or hold the money.

Payment options for buyers

A seller may offer PayFast, Paystack, both gateways or direct enquiries only. Available payment methods are shown by the gateway and depend on the seller’s account. MarketLane does not promise that a particular card, EFT, wallet or instalment option will be available.

At checkout, read the delivery terms and confirm your agreement with the seller. Check the business name, product and total again on the gateway page. Card or banking information is entered there, not in a MarketLane form.

Receipts and payment confirmation

  • Keep the receipt or confirmation issued by the gateway, including its transaction reference.
  • A click on Checkout or a return to MarketLane does not prove that a payment succeeded.
  • MarketLane has no payment-status tracker or order-history screen. Check the gateway receipt and ask the seller to confirm receipt of funds.
  • If money left your account but no receipt arrived, contact the seller and your payment provider or bank with the reference. Check before trying again to avoid paying twice.
  • A refund is handled by the seller through the relevant payment provider. Processing times depend on the provider, payment method and bank.

Enable a gateway for your products

  1. Activate your own merchant account

Complete the gateway’s registration, verification and bank-account requirements. A MarketLane seller profile does not activate or verify a gateway account.

  2. Create a live product payment link

For PayFast, use a once-off Pay Now email link with a fixed rand amount. For Paystack, use a one-time payment page with a fixed ZAR price. Do not use test pages, donation pages or subscriptions.

  3. Add and review the link

Go to Seller dashboard → Payment gateways. Add either or both links to the matching product. Enter collection or delivery terms and extra costs. Confirm the links belong to your business and show the correct item and price.

  4. Confirm funds before releasing goods

Check the transaction in your own gateway dashboard. A customer’s screenshot or forwarded email is not a substitute for confirmation in your account.
